Dune Camping?! I need some idea’s or anything recommended ?

by Camping Gear on April 10, 2012

I’ve gone camping in the dunes about 4 times but this time around I don’t want damp sleeping bags and a small tent that blows over. Im going to buy new everything. Anyone have any experience or certain things they had bought or used that made their trip Easier and less wet-er?

Has anyone used the Coleman PowerCat as well?
I’ve also been interested in the Coleman 17×9 3 Room Weathermaster Elite 2008 Tent….Any reviews on that?

If your tent blew over it’s because you tried using standard tent pegs. Instead, use "dead-man" anchors. Your pegs will sometimes do, but you need something a bit thicker and longer.

Dig a hole at least a foot deep. Tie the dead man to a line long enough to reach your peg loops. Lay the dead-man horizontally in the hole, parallel to the side of the tent. Then back-fill the hole.

Nor should you have you have damp sleeping bags. I assume your tent has a sewn-in floor. In addition, use a groundcloth under it: either a footprint made for it, or even a plastic tarp sized to fit.

Thermarest pads, under your sleeping bag, provide a more comfortable rest, add additional insulation, and raise you enough off the ground so that any condensation doesn’t transfer to the bag.

You can review different tents at both http://www.backcountry.com or http://www.backpacker.com. At backpacker.com you will also find tips about camping in different terrain. I buy all my gear at backcountry because they have a no questions asked return policy, they will refund your money or replace the item.
As far as your tent blowing over you can use a pie pan (cheap little aluminum pans) or even a sturdy shopping bag and bury them under the sand(or snow) to give you a great anchor.
To solve your damp sleeping bag situation go to a hardware store and buy the plastic painters tarp. They come in different lengths and thicknesses. Setup your tent at home and place the tent over the open tarp trace it with a marker and then cut it out about 2 or 3 inches inside your marker. The reason for cutting it short is so it doesnt come past the tent floor, if it does it’ll trap all rain water or moisture and act as a swimming pool under your tent. Or if you want to spend a little more (probably about $30) you can get the footprint of the tent.
