forming week, the drill instructor that was in charge of our platoon, during the time we were getting fitted for our boots, he asked me if i was mean. not thinking i told him no and he called me a p&$$y. he went up to another big recruit and asked him if he was mean and he said yes. he became the guide! lol, i missed out becoming the platoon guide because i told the drill instructor i wasnt mean. i learned being a platoon guide is not an automatic guarantee to become the platoon honorman because our scribe (secretary) became honorman in our platoon. please tell me if any of u had honormen besides the platoon guide. do the platoon honorman have other privlieges once he/she is out in the FMF?
do the other branches of the service have platoon guides and are they often promoted during basic as the Marines do?
i was the road guard! lol, do they still have that? its the second man in first and third squad that has to run at each intersection and stand at parade rest, that was alot of running at MCRD! lol, i miss that
our guide was picked during recieving CHT. thats how it was 30 years ago

During receiving the Drill Instuctors will give the recruits some questions to fill out pertaining to different things. IE: former ROTC,Education, Drawing. Plt Guides and Squad Leaders are chosen at this time. Scribes will be chosen if they have college and also have good writing ability. The Artist will be chosen later on to complete the Plt. Flag for the RR and 3rd Phase. During my 10 Plts. as a Drill Instructor My Guide was chosen as Honor Grad 7 times. My Scribe 3. The Plt Guide /Honorman does not have any privledges once he graduates from Recruit Training because then he goes to SOI and he is a Marine starting over again.
Our Drill Instructors just kept yanking people of of the ranks and said, "can you handle this" and watched for a few days. In the end, it came down to the one and only boot that could walk in a straight line without drifting all over the place.
Remember when one was chosen to be the "time body" the only one to wear a watch. I had my chance, DI told me to get my watch out of my foot locker. Boy did that make me feel good, all for about 5 minutes, sure enough he yells "time on deck" and I yelled back
"Sir, the time on deck is two fifteen, SIR" to which he promptly ran over, yanked off my watch and said your done you &^$##@# !!!!! seems in my haste I forgot to use "military time".

I was a Navy recruit petiy officer and was in the best of all petty officer positions, a job that let me run all over the base.
The guy’s would all want to take the laundry to the main washing area. Oh what freedom.
This was over 37 yrs ago, but I was picked because I’m the type of person who will take charge of a situation when all others wont.
Because of this the petty officers were picked by the SEALS to hear there recruiting speech, as well as the movie as to what was expected at traning -Coronado, at this time there was no Rambo and so the Special Forces was nothing more then extra PT, at 17 all I wanted to do was get out to the fleet.
Guides are not chosen in receiving.
They are chosen once you arrive at your platoon..and the position of guide will usually go through about 4-5 different people.
I dont see how you missed out on any position while you were in receiving.
